Panthers Keep Bobrovsky, Eye Contract Extension

The Florida Panthers decided against trading Sergei Bobrovsky at the NHL trade deadline, opting instead to pursue a contract extension with their veteran goaltender. Despite calls from other teams, general manager Bill Zito said the two-time Stanley Cup winner remains part of the franchise's core.

Bobrovsky, 37, is having his worst statistical season with an .873 save percentage, the lowest among goalies with more than 25 starts. The Panthers, eliminated from playoff contention after three consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances, could have moved him as a pending free agent. Instead, they're focused on keeping their championship core intact.

Zito emphasized that the team values Bobrovsky's leadership and experience, particularly with young players like Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, and Aaron Ekblad signed long-term. The decision reflects Florida's commitment to continuity rather than a full rebuild, even as they miss the playoffs for the first time in four years.
