The Edmonton Oilers have acquired veteran defenseman Connor Murphy from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for a 2028 second-round pick. The 32-year-old blueliner, who has four goals and 13 points in 60 games this season, brings size and experience to Edmonton's struggling defensive unit. Chicago will retain 50% of Murphy's $4.4 million salary.

Murphy's addition addresses a critical need for the Oilers, who rank 26th in penalty kill efficiency at 76.9%. The 6-foot-4 defenseman has logged 117:16 in short-handed ice time and was part of Chicago's NHL-leading penalty kill unit. Edmonton's defensive struggles have been evident in their recent slide, losing five of six games while allowing 5.4 goals per contest.

The trade comes as Edmonton sits third in the Pacific Division with only a one-point lead over Seattle for the final wild-card spot. Earlier this season, the Oilers acquired goaltender Tristan Jarry and brought back Paul Coffey as an assistant coach. With only $200,000 in cap space remaining before Friday's deadline, Edmonton's front office has made it clear that shoring up their defensive structure is the priority as they push for another deep playoff run.
