Oilers Sign Frederik Andersen to One-Year Deal for Goaltending Help

Frederik Andersen is heading to Edmonton on a one-year, $2.75 million deal that addresses the Oilers' goaltending uncertainty. The 36-year-old netminder joins after five seasons with Carolina, where he helped the Hurricanes reach the Stanley Cup Final before taking a backseat to Brandon Bussi in the championship series.

Edmonton's crease became a problem area after Tristan Jarry managed only an .857 save percentage in 19 regular-season appearances. The Oilers also acquired Buffalo's Devon Levi, suggesting they're building a three-goalie rotation. Andersen's contract carries just a $1 million cap hit with $1.8 million in performance bonuses tied to games played and playoff success.

The move reunites Andersen with Zach Hyman, his former teammate from Toronto, and new coach Mike Babcock who was behind the bench during his Maple Leafs tenure. Andersen played through a knee injury during the Final and dedicated the Cup win to his late agent Claude Lemieux, who died by suicide in May.

Despite a 16-14-5 record and 3.05 goals-against average this season, Andersen went 12-1 in three Eastern Conference series during Carolina's playoff run. The Danish netminder, a 2012 third-round pick, brings extensive international experience including recent Olympic play. This signing gives Edmonton a proven playoff performer as they chase their first championship since 1990.
