Brendan Gallagher's 14-year tenure with the Montreal Canadiens ended Monday as the veteran forward was dealt to the Vancouver Canucks for future considerations. The 34-year-old has one year left on his contract, with Montreal retaining 50% of his $6.5 million cap hit to finalize the deal.

Gallagher played 911 games for Montreal since being drafted in 2010, compiling 246 goals and 487 points. Last season, he appeared in 77 regular-season contests, scoring seven goals and 23 points while adding one goal in three playoff appearances during their run to the Eastern Conference Final. His role diminished significantly in March when he became a healthy scratch.

The move reunites Gallagher with his roots. Born in Alberta but raised in British Columbia, he starred in the WHL with Victoria before reaching the NHL. Manny Malhotra, his former Canadiens teammate from 2014-15, now coaches the Canucks and will guide Gallagher through potentially his final professional seasons.

Montreal wanted to accommodate Gallagher's preferred destination, making this a respectful parting after his heart-and-soul presence defined his career. Vancouver also acquired a 2029 third-round pick from Nashville in exchange for Nils Hoglander earlier Monday, signaling their intent to add veteran leadership while building for the future.
