Blue Jackets Trade for Conor Garland in Playoff Push

The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired forward Conor Garland from the Vancouver Canucks in a trade that sends Columbus' 2026 third-round pick and 2028 second-round pick to Vancouver. Garland, 29, has struggled this season with seven goals and 19 assists in 50 games for the last-place Canucks, going scoreless in his past 23 games.

Despite his recent slump, Garland brings a proven scoring touch to Columbus, having recorded at least 19 goals in four of his past six NHL seasons. The Blue Jackets view him as a versatile two-way forward who can contribute immediately to their playoff push. Columbus president of hockey operations Don Waddell praised Garland's energy and character in a statement.

What makes this deal unusual is Garland's contract situation. He's already signed to a six-year, $6 million cap hit extension with Vancouver that begins next season and includes a full no-movement clause for the first three years. The Blue Jackets, currently one point behind Boston for the final Eastern Conference wild-card spot, hope Garland's offensive skills will help their surge under new coach Rick Bowness, who has led the team to a 13-2-1 record since taking over.
