Colorado Avalanche GM Joe Sakic continues his roster overhaul by trading winger Valeri Nichushkin to the Columbus Blue Jackets. In exchange, the Avalanche receive a 2026 second-round pick, a 2027 third-round pick, and a 2029 fifth-round pick. This move follows a disappointing Western Conference finals sweep by Vegas.

Nichushkin brings a significant contract to Columbus, carrying a $6.125 million cap hit through 2030. The 31-year-old winger recorded 49 points in 72 regular-season games last year. He was a vital part of Colorado's 2022 Stanley Cup championship run, providing size and scoring depth during their playoff success.

Columbus seeks immediate offensive help after finishing 19th in the NHL last season. Adding Nichushkin to their top nine aims to fix a roster that averaged only three goals per game. Meanwhile, Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell faces uncertainty regarding star defenseman Zach Werenski, who may not re-sign with the team.
