Coyle Signs 6-Year, $36M Extension With Blue Jackets

The Columbus Blue Jackets secured Charlie Coyle with a 6-year, $36 million contract extension, keeping the 34-year-old center off the free agent market. Coyle delivered 20 goals and 38 assists in 82 games last season, showcasing his versatility across all situations including power play and penalty kill duties. His $6 million AAV reflects his value as a durable, consistent performer who missed just one game over the past six seasons.

General manager Don Waddell confirmed the contract matches that of forward Conor Garland in both years and money. Coyle, acquired from Colorado last June after a trade deadline move from Boston, would have drawn significant interest as a top veteran center. Waddell revealed he received "10 to 12 calls" from teams seeking Coyle's negotiating rights, highlighting the thin unrestricted free agent class this summer.

The Blue Jackets now have three players signed through 2031-32 alongside Coyle, including defenseman Ivan Provorov. Coyle expressed his desire to stay in Columbus, which factored into the negotiation despite potential offers elsewhere. His decision to remain with the team provides stability to their forward core, though it also limits salary cap flexibility for addressing other roster needs.
