The Vancouver Canucks announced Ryan Johnson as their new general manager while Daniel and Henrik Sedin will serve as co-presidents of hockey operations. Johnson, promoted from assistant GM where he worked since 2013-14, replaces Patrik Allvin who was fired in April after the team posted the NHL's worst record. The Sedins, former franchise cornerstones, take over from Jim Rutherford who steps down after the draft.

These moves follow a turbulent 18 months that saw the Canucks regress from conference final contenders to lottery participants. Internal friction between J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson became public, leading to Miller's January trade to the New York Rangers. Pettersson remains after signing his eight-year, $92.8 million contract in March 2024. Coach Rick Tocchet departed for Philadelphia after the season.

The rebuild accelerated with captain Quinn Hughes traded to Minnesota in December for prospects and picks. Vancouver enters the draft with the third overall selection plus two first-round choices and five selections in the first three rounds. The organization has $21.16 million in salary cap space to reshape the roster around Pettersson, Brock Boeser, and Thatcher Demko.

Johnson and the Sedins must restore stability to a franchise that has struggled with consistency for over a decade. Their familiarity with the organization's culture and operations provides a foundation for rebuilding trust with fans while constructing a sustainable contender.
