An Arizona State hockey player is in the hospital after collapsing during outdoor training at the school's track facilities on Aug. 20.

Matthew Mayich, 21, was described to have suffered a possible cardiac event, according to the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network. A sixth-round pick by the St. Louis Blues in the 2023 NHL Draft, Mayich started his college career at Clarkson before transferring to Arizona State this offseason.

The university announced on Wednesday, Aug. 26 that it's conducting an investigation into the matter and is reviewing everything surrounding the workout that led to Mayich's collapse.

The Canadian-Croatian Chamber of Commerce held a virtual prayer session for Mayich on Aug. 25, with one of his family members thanking the many people on the call, per the report. "Even though we are going through this heartbreak, it is truly such a blessing to see everyone praying and just the impact Matthew has had on so many people," said Mayich's cousin, Victoria Beara.
