Bill White Honored with Hall of Fame's Buck O'Neil Award

Former National League President Bill White will receive the Buck O'Neil Lifetime Achievement Award from baseball's Hall of Fame on July 25 in Cooperstown. The 92-year-old former player and broadcaster is being recognized for his contributions to the sport's growth and his character that mirrors the award's namesake.

White, who hit .286 with 202 home runs during his 14-year MLB career from 1956-69, played for the New York and San Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, and Philadelphia Phillies. His playing career included six All-Star selections, with eight if counting the years when two All-Star Games were played.

Beyond his playing days, White made history as baseball's first Black league president from 1989-94, succeeding A. Bartlett Giamatti. He also spent 18 years as a New York Yankees broadcaster from 1971-88. White becomes the seventh recipient of this award, which honors individuals who have broadened baseball's appeal while demonstrating character, integrity, and dignity comparable to Buck O'Neil.
