Venture Funding & AI Deals
AI and energy dominated this week's top ten startup funding rounds, as investors continued to spread capital across nearly every emerging niche. Separately, Crunchbase data shows active startup investors largely maintained their dealmaking pace in the third quarter even as total funding declined. Customer workflows are emerging as a key defensive advantage for AI companies, which can build durable moats by embedding products into essential daily operations.
Startup Growth & Founder Strategy
Speakers ahead of TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 outlined playbooks for landing a first 1,000 customers, drawing on leaders from Gamma, Engine, and Google Ventures. The conference, which expects 10,000 founders and investors, opens October 13 in San Francisco, with early-bird pricing savings of up to $100 still available. Revolut is rolling out agentic shopping features as part of its broader push into AI-driven commerce.
Limited Partner Scrutiny
Limited partners are raising red flags over tech funding sustainability, signaling tighter scrutiny of venture allocations. The concern contrasts with the continued appetite for AI assets visible in recent deal flow.
Buyouts & Portfolio Exits
Stone Point-backed Alliant acquired Laconia-based Melcher & Prescott, a commercial insurance broker founded in 1862. Long Water took a majority stake in Blastco, a Channelview, Texas surface preparation provider founded in 1983, to build a national coatings platform. Adelis agreed to sell Danish IT provider net IP to Synova, a managed services firm serving Danish SMEs with more than 270 employees. Sopris Capital completed the carve-out of Edinburgh AI firm Blackford from Bayer, whose orchestration platform serves radiology departments.
Exits & Large Transactions
TA Associates agreed to sell Rocscience to Hexagon in a $535m deal. Audax sold Rensa Filtration to AEA and BCI after a ten-acquisition buy-and-build strategy. Trilantic North America delivered a $945m exit of SOFIE Biosciences, aided by a boom in radiopharmaceuticals. Gallant Capital's Duncan Solutions completed its purchase of Pioneer Credit Recovery, one of four businesses carved out of Navient's government portfolio.
Surgical Equipment Consolidation
Private equity firms are circling surgical equipment providers as demand grows, with Apollo, Cinven, Kohlberg, and Montagu among the active bidders. Barriers to entry in the sector make it attractive to firms already operating in healthcare, and Apollo, Kohlberg, and Montagu are pursuing targets in the space.
Credit Markets & Fund Activity
CVC Credit priced Cordatus XXXIX, a European CLO, at its lowest single-A level, with the captive equity fund supporting the deal's lead position.
Geopolitics & Distressed Assets
Carlyle withdrew from the pursuit of Lukoil's international assets and is no longer actively bidding. In the venture space, an ex-OpenAI robotics lead's factory automation startup, Daedalus, has entered insolvency proceedings, a reminder of the risks in capital-intensive hardware bets.
Firm Moves & Hiring
Omni Partners hired Elliot Tahmasebi from Copper Street Capital as partner, where he will lead new platform investments in founder-led financial and professional services firms. Ambienta added 23 hires, including three partners, across its European offices spanning private equity, portfolio operations, and investor relations.
