Deal of the Day: Boots
Sycamore Partners has agreed to sell Boots to Wittington Investments, the holding company of Canada's Weston family, in an $8.9bn deal that ends the drugstore chain's brief spell in private equity ownership. The transaction hands the roughly 1,900-store UK pharmacy business back to the family that controlled it for decades before selling to KKR in 2007 and then to Walgreens Boots Alliance, which offloaded it to Sycamore in 2025. The Weston family's return comes as Boots faces intense competition from online pharmacies and UK supermarket rivals, with the new owners expected to accelerate store closures and push further into higher-margin beauty and healthcare services.
Healthcare Consolidation
Clayton, Dubilier & Rice has teamed up with McKesson to take Option Care Health private in a $5.8bn deal, combining the infusion therapy provider with the drug distributor's own home-care arm. The $75-per-share cash offer represents a 20% premium to the stock's 30-day average, and the partnership gives CD&R a platform to consolidate the fragmented home-infusion market. Separately, Altaris has completed its carve-out of Clarivate's life sciences and healthcare data business, which provides AI-enabled decision-support tools to pharmaceutical and biotech clients. Goldman Sachs-backed Integrity Care Group has closed its acquisition of 15 Next Care urgent care clinics across Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas, expanding its regional footprint in the walk-in clinic sector. Spectrum Equity has made its first institutional investment in Symmetric, a Pittsburgh-based hospital data firm whose database tracks nearly 20 million patient records for health systems and payers.
Senior Living and Pharma
BDT & MSD has agreed to acquire Sunrise Senior Living from PSP Investments, taking control of a portfolio of more than 230 senior living communities across the US and Canada. The deal deepens BDT & MSD's push into age-related real estate at a time when occupancy rates at upscale assisted living facilities have recovered to pre-pandemic levels. In European pharma, CVC and Groupe Bruxelles Lambert have lifted their offer for Italian drugmaker Recordati to €53 per share, describing the sweetened bid as "best and final" after Recordati's board rejected their earlier approach as too low. The €27bn deal would be the largest European healthcare buyout since 2021 and gives CVC control of a portfolio of rare-disease and cardiology treatments.
Infrastructure and Energy
Global Infrastructure Partners and CPP Investments have taken a 50% stake in AT&T's new fibre joint venture, a transaction that values the network assets at roughly $20bn and provides the telecom carrier with a war chest to expand gigabit broadband across its footprint. The JV, which covers about 8.5 million locations, marks one of the largest infrastructure deals of the year and hands GIP — now part of BlackRock — a cornerstone position in US fibre. In power, Partners Group-backed Middle River Power has bought a California gas plant from Ares Management, adding flexible generation capacity that can backstop the state's intermittent solar and wind output. The acquisition comes as California grid operators warn of tight summer supply margins. In the Permian Basin, Old Ironsides Energy and EnCap Flatrock's Brazos Midstream have sealed the sale of their Midland Basin natural gas gathering and processing system to ONEOK for $4.4bn, a deal covering roughly 700 miles of pipeline and 1.2 billion cubic feet per day of processing capacity.
Cybersecurity and Business Services
Sojourner has agreed to merge with LPNA to broaden its personal care capabilities, while Main Capital, Gemspring Capital and One Equity Partners all announced cybersecurity investments in a flurry of activity ahead of SIPA Day 2026, which returns to New York on October 15. Carlyle and CVC's CFGI has struck a deal for BAO Consulting, a Texas-based accounting and finance advisory firm founded in 2021 that provides CFO and controller services to mid-market companies. North Branch Capital has backed Callaway Industrial Services, a Mooresville, North Carolina-based provider of specialized industrial cleaning and maintenance services. Align Capital Partners' Advantage Investigations has completed its add-on of Nor Star Investigations, a Fishkill, New York-based firm offering surveillance, background checks and insurance fraud detection.
Fundraising and Capital Markets
Boka is targeting $300m for its third defence fund, having begun raising in Q2 with a goal of final close by Q1 next year, as investors pile into military technology amid elevated geopolitical tensions. Preliminary PEI Group data shows fundraising picked up in Q3, with the upturn driven by large buyout funds and infrastructure vehicles reaching final closes. The improved fundraising environment comes as North America's venture market continues to cool: investors poured just $92bn into seed- through growth-stage rounds in Q3, a 35% drop quarter over quarter, as AI megarounds fade and companies hold off on raising ahead of a wave of AI IPOs. The scrutiny those public listings will bring is raising the bar for private AI companies, argues guest author Maor Farid, founder of a venture firm focused on applied AI.
European AI and Startups
European AI startups are bolstering the continent's sovereign AI ambitions with new model releases, as Aleph Alpha and Mistral both unveiled frontier-scale systems that aim to compete with US labs while keeping data on European soil. In biotech, an Owkin alum has raised $25m in seed funding for River Cell, a startup building a "world model" for human cells that could accelerate drug discovery and personalised medicine. The financing underscores continued appetite for AI-native biology startups despite the broader venture slowdown. Separately, fintech Leatherback has rebranded to Foren after a two-year transformation that shifted its focus from cross-border payments to financial crime compliance software, with the name change marking the final step in the pivot.
Events and Founder Funding
Tech Crunch Disrupt 2026 has unveiled the full lineup of interactive roundtables for this year's event, featuring participants from Nvidia, Chime, Obvious Ventures and Anthropic across topics ranging from GPU supply chains to founder-led growth strategies. With six days to go before doors open, organisers say more than 10,000 attendees are expected, and early-bird pricing on passes expires this weekend. In founder funding news, Hilt, a cybersecurity startup founded by a former ballet dancer and son of a magician, has raised $4.2m in seed funding, the latest in a series of rounds backing non-tech founders building security tools. For founders preparing their next raise, the key metrics investors scrutinise at Series A include net revenue retention, gross margin and sales efficiency, according to a new guide published this week.
