Perplexity Ditches Ads to Protect User Trust

AI company Perplexity is abandoning its advertising strategy over concerns that ads would erode user trust, despite competitors like OpenAI and Google moving in the opposite direction. The company initially experimented with sponsored answers in 2024 but phased out the approach last year, with executives telling the Financial Times they have no plans to revisit it.

Perplexity's decision comes as other AI companies are increasingly turning to advertising to generate revenue. OpenAI recently introduced ads for ChatGPT users on free and low-cost plans, while Google has added ads to AI Mode and AI Overviews in search results. However, Google has not yet incorporated ads into its Gemini chatbot. Anthropic, maker of Claude, has mocked OpenAI's ad strategy and maintains it has no plans to follow suit, arguing that ads would contradict its mission of creating a helpful assistant for work and deep thinking.

The move highlights the tension AI companies face between monetization and maintaining user trust. As the cost of training and operating large language models continues to climb without producing profits, companies are exploring various revenue strategies. Perplexity's executives believe that maintaining user confidence in receiving unbiased answers is essential for long-term success and willingness to pay for the service.
