Apple has launched a new AirTag featuring a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. This upgrade enables Precision Finding to work up to 50% farther away from the tracked item compared to the original. However, this extended range is exclusively available on specific iPhone models. The new AirTag also boasts an improved Bluetooth chip, enhancing overall range even without Precision Finding.

To take full advantage of the improved Precision Finding, users will need an iPhone 15 or newer model. This is because both the AirTag and the iPhone must have Apple's second-generation Ultra Wideband chip. The lower-end iPhone 16e does not include this newer chip. This upgrade is a result of Apple's ongoing efforts to refine its tracking technology.

For those with older iPhones, Precision Finding at the previous distances remains supported, starting with the iPhone 11. The new AirTag is available for purchase now, with pricing staying at $29 for one and $99 for a pack of four. This update ensures that Apple continues to compete in the item tracker market, dominated by Tile and other competitors.

With AirTag upgrades, Apple is aiming to enhance user experience and maintain its position in the competitive market of item finders. The improved range and functionality will likely attract many users. What will be interesting is to see how competitors respond to these feature improvements.
