Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8, launched this month, closely matches rumors about Apple's foldable iPhone Ultra. iFixit's teardown reveals persistent hinge issues: the Fold8 has an IP48 dust-and-water rating, resisting water but not fine dust. A dust test produced "truly awful crunching and grinding noises" and the device stopped opening normally. iFixit found sand particles as small as 0.16mm bypass the hinge's defenses.

Despite a new hinge and titanium-reinforced display, the crease became more visible after just seven days of use. Repairability scored 4/10; the bezel broke during removal and accessing the hinge requires removing the display. "It's an expensive, painful repair even when everything goes right," said iFixit.

The Fold8's dimensions (5.5-inch closed, 7.6-inch open) match rumored specs for Apple's foldable iPhone Ultra, expected this September. Apple reportedly uses Samsung Display panels, liquid metal for the hinge, and optically clear adhesive to minimize crease. Google's Pixel 11 Pro Fold, with IP68 and a gearless hinge, launches August 20.
