Apple has held back its first foldable iPhone while Samsung has already shipped eight Galaxy Z Fold generations. Initial reasons for the delay were clear, but Samsung’s recent release shows Apple’s timing couldn’t have been better.

Samsung’s early enthusiasm turned into a lesson; the first Galaxy Fold’s fragile display led to a recall. Apple waited for the display tech to mature, eliminating visible creases, and even sent engineers to aid Samsung in the process.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 now sports a display almost identical to the one slated for the iPhone Ultra, with a crease barely visible when unfolded. Demand for the Fold 8 is already three times that of its predecessor, and the foldable line has seen a 50 % jump last year.

The iPhone Ultra will launch next month alongside the iPhone 18 Pro. Analysts predict it will capture roughly 25 % of the total folding‑smartphone market.
