Microsoft Office 2019 for Mac Loses Editing Capability July 13

Microsoft will block document editing in Office 2019 for Mac starting July 13, citing an expired digital certificate that validates the suite's license. The change affects Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote, forcing these applications into "reduced functionality mode" where users can only view and print existing files.

Microsoft actually renewed the certificate but refuses to push the fix to Office 2019 users, since support ended in October 2023. Current subscribers using Microsoft 365 or Office 2021 will receive version 16.83 automatically and avoid disruption. The company's revised messaging dropped promises that apps would keep functioning, now stating data "can be accessed in a supported Microsoft 365 or Office product."

IT consultants like JimmyTech argue this represents an intentional push to migrate legacy users rather than a technical necessity. Microsoft began emailing affected customers in May but many may still be unaware of the upcoming limitation. The company recommends switching to Office 2024, subscribing to Microsoft 365, or trying free alternatives like Apple's iWork suite or LibreOffice.

Users can verify their build version through Word's About menu, though most modern installations update automatically. This move reinforces Microsoft's subscription-first strategy while leaving long-time customers with functional-but-limited software after spending hundreds on perpetual licenses.
