Mac Office 2019 loses editing ability after July 13

Microsoft has said Office 2019 for Mac will enter read‑only mode on July 13 because an expiring certificate triggers reduced functionality mode. The change locks Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote to open and print only, preventing new files or edits. This affects any Mac user running the older suite.

Users whose machines run macOS 12 Monterey or iOS 17 and later can sidestep the issue by upgrading to Microsoft 365 or Office 2021. Office 2019 lost support on October 10 2023, so no patches or reinstalls will revive it. Microsoft recommends a 365 subscription, a one‑time purchase of Office 2024, or using the free web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Windows and Android devices remain unaffected, and Office 2021 will keep receiving security updates until October 13 2026. The shift overturns a 2023 promise that older Mac apps would continue to function despite end‑of‑support, a guarantee later stripped from documentation. Mac users must migrate to a supported suite or accept a permanently read‑only productivity environment.

The abrupt cut‑off forces businesses and students to reassess budgeting for productivity tools. Licensing fees for Microsoft 365 average around $99 per year for individuals, while the one‑time cost of Office 2024 starts near $149, offering a path forward for those averse to subscription models. Ignoring the change leaves critical documents locked behind a view‑only barrier.
