How to Format a USB Drive on Windows

Formatting a storage drive is crucial for clearing corrupted data, removing hidden malware, and optimizing stability. It is recommended to format both old and brand new drives to ensure they match your specific needs, as factory configurations may not be optimal.

There are three main formats for Windows users. NTFS is best for drives used exclusively with Windows. exFAT offers the broadest compatibility for non-Windows systems like Android, Linux, or macOS and supports files larger than 4GB. FAT32 is the oldest format; while highly compatible with legacy devices like car stereos, it cannot handle files larger than 4GB.

To format, plug the device into a USB port and open Windows Explorer. Right-click the drive under 'This PC' and select Format. Choose your desired file system from the dropdown menu, enter a custom Volume Label if desired, and click Format. The process typically takes from a few seconds to several minutes.
