Microsoft Owes Mac Users a Breakup: Office 2019 Slips to View‑Only on July 13

Microsoft’s Office 2019 and 2021 for Mac will shift into a view‑only mode on July 13, 2026 when a license‑validation certificate expires. The move follows Office 2019’s end of support in October 2023, when Microsoft promised the software would continue to function. Instead, files can open but cannot be edited or saved after the deadline for all existing users.

Office 2019 was sold as a one‑time purchase for $149.99 on Microsoft Store, marketed alongside the subscription‑based Office 365. After the 2023 end‑of‑support page was redated in May 2026, the promise of continued functionality disappeared. Microsoft now offers users three options: stay in view‑only mode, switch to free web apps, or pay for a subscription or a new perpetual license.

The certificate expiration forces Office 2021 users on macOS 12 or later to update to build 16.83 to avoid conversion, while Office 2019 users have no fix. Windows and Android versions remain unaffected. Users notified in May 2026 received a Microsoft 365 Personal trial, which automatically converts to a subscription if not cancelled. Microsoft has issued apology for breaking 2023 assurance.
