Microsoft Drops Office Support for Older Macs and iPhones

Microsoft will end support for legacy Apple devices in its Office suite starting next month, leaving users of older Macs and iPhones unable to create or edit documents. The change affects Microsoft 365 subscribers and those with standalone Office 2019 or 2021 installations on incompatible systems.

Starting July 13, 2026, the minimum supported versions will be macOS 12 Monterey and iOS 17. Devices running older operating systems will enter 'reduced functionality mode' - they can open and print files but cannot save changes or create new documents. This impacts iPhone 8, iPhone X, and earlier models on the iOS side.

Mac users with machines from 2015 onward will remain compatible, though older hardware will face the same editing restrictions. Microsoft recommends upgrading to a supported OS or migrating to the web-based version at microsoft365.com, suggesting users move files to OneDrive for continued access.

The move reflects Microsoft's focus on modern platforms with enhanced security and performance capabilities. Legacy device owners must choose between upgrading their hardware, subscribing to Microsoft 365, or accepting limited functionality when working with Office documents.
