Apple Price Hikes: Will Upgrades Follow?

Apple dramatically raised prices this summer amid a global memory crisis, carpeting the iPad Air from $599 to $749, the M5 MacBook Pro from $1699 to $1999, and the Apple TV from $129 to $199. These steep hikes raise the question: will Apple deliver major improvements to justify the new price points?

Some products are on the cusp of overhauls—MacBook Pro and iPad mini—while others have seen little change for years. With the base iPad retaining its 2022 design and the iPad Air unchanged since 2020, users may hesitate to pay higher prices when cheaper used options are available. A recent M4 iPad Air sold for $599 (or $499) a few months ago, yet now demands $749.

Apple could add modest upgrades—mini‑LED displays, a 120 Hz panel on the iPad Air, or a laminated screen on the base iPad—to make the price jump feel worthwhile without a full redesign. Alternatively, the company might downgrade certain models, such as reintroducing 128 GB iPhones, to balance costs.
