iOS 27 adds swipe‑to‑clear Now Playing widget

Apple’s upcoming iOS 27 adds a way to dismiss the Now Playing widget on the iPhone lock screen. In the first developer build, swiping left on the playback controls reveals a Clear button that removes both the large control bar and the smaller Dynamic Island widget. Previously users could not hide the interface at all. It works on all current iPhone models.

The new gesture also clears the widget from the Dynamic Island, but restoring it isn’t straightforward. 9to5Mac reports the only current workaround is pausing playback, waiting several minutes, then resuming, which varies by app; switching from a podcast to video re‑invokes the lock‑screen controls. Apple has not explained an immediate re‑show method. Older iOS versions never offered this capability, making the change notable.

For users who value a clean lock screen, the ability to swipe away Now Playing is a welcome refinement, especially as iOS 27 heads toward a public beta next month and a fall release. The tweak signals Apple’s attention to small‑scale UI polish alongside larger feature upgrades slated for the same OS cycle. Such incremental improvements often shape daily user satisfaction more than headline features.
