Apple's Precision Finding feature on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2, which helps locate lost items, only works with the new AirTag 2. According to a new Apple support document, the original AirTag, released in 2021, is not supported. This means users with older AirTags won't be able to leverage the precise directional guidance on their Apple Watches.

To use Precision Finding on the Apple Watch with the AirTag 2, users need to be running watchOS 26.2.1 or later. The feature allows for more accurate tracking, displaying a directional arrow and distance on the watch. The new AirTag also boasts a longer range for Precision Finding, up to 1.5 times farther than the original.

This limitation is likely due to hardware differences between the two AirTag generations. While the original AirTag can still be located using Precision Finding on an iPhone 11 or newer, the Apple Watch functionality is limited to the newer model. This highlights Apple's strategy of incentivizing upgrades.

With the launch of the AirTag 2, Apple is also improving the capabilities of its existing ecosystem. The move ensures the latest features are tied to the newest hardware, driving consumer adoption of the newest devices. What's next? More advanced features for the AirTag and Find My network.
