Apple Watch gets AirTag Precision Finding - Setup guide

Apple Watch users can now use Precision Finding to locate AirTag 2 devices directly from their wrist. This feature, previously limited to iPhones, uses haptic, visual, and audio feedback to guide users step-by-step to lost items. The expansion to Apple Watch represents a significant usability improvement for the second-generation tracker.

To set up Precision Finding on Apple Watch, users must navigate to Control Center rather than the Find Items app. The process involves adding the Find AirTag function through the Edit option, then selecting the specific item. Once configured, the AirTag displays a custom icon matching the item type - for instance, a backpack icon if attached to a bag.

Hardware requirements include an AirTag 2 and Apple Watch Series 9 or later, or Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, running watchOS 26.2.1 or newer. The feature offers improved range, working from up to 1.5x farther away than the original AirTag. While convenient, some users may find the Control Center-only access less intuitive than having it in the dedicated Find Items app, though future updates could address this.
