Apple Delays OLED MacBook Air Until 2028, Keeping LCD Tech

Apple is planning to launch a MacBook Air with an OLED display, but it won't arrive until at least 2028, according to Bloomberg. The company is prioritizing OLED technology for its MacBook Pro line first, with rumors suggesting a touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro could launch as early as late 2026 or early 2027. Large, high-quality OLED displays remain expensive, making them impractical for Apple's midrange devices for now.

Apple introduced OLED to its iPad Pro lineup in 2024, marking the company's first use of the technology in larger screens beyond iPhones and Apple Watches. OLED displays offer superior contrast, richer colors, deeper blacks, wider viewing angles, and often better power efficiency than the LCD and mini-LED displays currently used in Macs. The technology is more complex to implement in bigger displays, which explains Apple's cautious rollout strategy.

For MacBook Air users, this means the popular laptop will likely continue using LCD display technology until 2028 or 2029. While some speculate Apple might introduce a mini-LED interim update, no rumors currently support that possibility. The delay frustrates some users who note that competitors like Lenovo already offer laptops with the same 15.3-inch OLED panels that would be perfect for the MacBook Air.
