X's Encrypted XChat App Lands on App Store

X’s dedicated messaging application, XChat, has surfaced on the App Store, signaling an imminent launch scheduled for April 17th. This application is distinctly separate from the previous identity of X, despite Elon Musk's prior talk of an integrated, encrypted DM overhaul slated for mid-2025. Instead of an in-app feature, users receive a standalone client for communication.

This new service connects X users for both messaging and cross-device calling. Key features include end-to-end encryption, message deletion for all participants, and options to block screenshots or enable messages that vanish after five minutes. Musk’s history with release dates suggests this timeline should be approached with caution, given past optimism regarding the feature set.

Consumers gain access to large group functionality, supporting up to 481 members, a substantial capacity for a platform focused on direct communication. Furthermore, X promises the service will be completely ad-free and refrain from user tracking, a direct response to privacy concerns often associated with large social platforms. Pre-orders are available now for iPhone and iPad users.

The shift to a standalone, encrypted app addresses the stated goal of a “whole new architecture” for messaging, even if the delivery method deviated from initial internal projections. The application’s feature set positions it as a direct competitor to established secure chat services.
