Meta is adding a new feature to Instagram called First Draft, which automatically trims silences and pauses from video clips to simplify editing for Reels. Users can select clips from their Reels Gallery, tap First Draft, and the tool will analyze and arrange them into a timeline, ready for further editing or direct posting. This feature is designed to save time on cleanup, allowing creators to focus on creative decisions rather than manual trimming.

First Draft is distinct from Meta's other AI-powered editing tools, as it reportedly does not use AI technology. The Verge notes that Meta classifies this feature as "machine learning" rather than AI, marking a notable shift in how the company labels its tools. This comes amid a broader trend of Meta integrating AI into Instagram, such as AI-powered story editing and messaging features, though First Draft appears to be a more straightforward utility.

The feature will roll out on iOS first, with Android support expected later. Meta has not provided a specific timeline for the Android release. This launch follows the introduction of Edits, a standalone video editing app, in April 2025, which also aims to streamline Reels creation. First Draft's simplicity and lack of AI could appeal to users who prefer a more direct editing approach.
