Tesla expands Robotaxi service into Dallas and Houston

Tesla is extending its Robotaxi network into two new Texas markets, rolling out limited service zones in Dallas and Houston. The company posted maps on X showing the designated streets where its autonomous fleet will operate. Early trials began in Austin, where a human “Tesla Safety Monitor” rode beside passengers, but recent tests have shown the cars running without a seat‑back supervisor using Model Y sedans.

Waymo already offers its own driverless rides in both cities, having launched there in February, so Tesla’s move pits two of the industry’s biggest players against each other on the same streets. While the Dallas‑Houston rollout does not clarify whether a safety monitor will be present, Tesla previously admitted some rides are remotely piloted by humans when needed and may collect data for future upgrades.

Beyond Texas, Tesla aims to enter California’s Bay Area, where it has secured a ride‑hailing license but still lacks permission for fully driverless operation. The expansion underscores the company’s push to monetize its Full Self‑Driving stack before regulators grant broader autonomous clearance, signaling a race to capture fare revenue in the nascent robo‑taxi market for early adopters willing to pay premium fares.
