Sega's Golden Axe animated series will debut on Paramount+ on September 16, with a new trailer showcasing self-referential humor. The show follows a trio of heroes on a quest to save the kingdom of Yuria from Death Adder, who wields the Golden Axe. The trailer includes nods to the classic 1989 game, such as character select screen references and Tyris declaring they must "defeat a series of progressively harder enemies until we have a big final battle with Death Adder." The series features meta jokes about mini-bosses and Tyris yelling "Sega!" before charging into battle.

The voice cast includes Liam McIntyre as Ax Battler, Lisa Gilroy as Tyris, Matthew Rhys as Gilius, and Danny Pudi as Hampton Squib. Created by Mike McMahon and Joe Chandler, the series was originally planned for Comedy Central but will now stream exclusively on Paramount+. The first season consists of 10 episodes, with runtime expected to mirror the original game's 32-minute completion time.

This adaptation is part of Sega's broader effort to revive classic franchises through new entries and adaptations. The animated series represents a unique blend of nostalgia and modern humor, appealing to both longtime fans of the beat-'em-up genre and newcomers to the franchise.
