Discord rolls out end-to-end encryption for all calls

Discord has completed its rollout of end-to-end encryption across all voice and video calls, a years-long effort that now applies to every call outside of stage channels. Users get the protection automatically — no opt-in required. The move puts Discord in line with companies prioritizing user privacy, even as some competitors have walked away from encryption.

Meta pulled end-to-end encryption from Instagram DMs earlier this year, and TikTok said it wouldn't offer the feature in its direct messages either. That's a stark contrast to Discord's approach, which applies encryption universally to calls rather than making it a feature users toggle on manually.

Apple, meanwhile, is encrypting RCS messages between iOS and Android devices, signaling that encryption remains a selling point for platforms willing to invest in it. Discord's decision sends a clear message: protecting user conversations is increasingly becoming a baseline expectation rather than a premium feature.

The rollout affects all standard voice and video calls without requiring any action from users. Discord's willingness to deliver this universally puts pressure on other platforms that have stripped encryption in favor of features that benefit their business models.
