Apple Finally Enables Encrypted RCS Messaging For Android

Apple and Google have finally collaborated on end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging for iPhone and Android chats with iOS 26.5 beta. This represents a significant shift after years of keeping encrypted messaging within their respective ecosystems. The new system builds encryption directly into the GSMA's RCS Universal Profile, moving away from Google's previous proprietary solution that Apple had refused to adopt.

When both users run the latest software and use a supported carrier, encrypted RCS works automatically without complicated setup. Major carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon in the US, as well as Rogers, Bell, and Telus in Canada, have already implemented this feature. Users can confirm secure connections through a lock icon appearing in chat threads.

This development addresses a long-standing privacy concern where iMessage encryption would disappear whenever an Android user joined a conversation. Previously, cross-platform messages defaulted to SMS or basic RCS, functioning as "open postcards" readable by anyone with the right tools. Apple's delay in implementing this standard has been criticized as a strategy to maintain ecosystem lock-in through the "green bubble" stigma.
