Apple ends iOS 26.5 downgrade option

Apple rolled out iOS 26.5 to every supported device last week, and within 24 hours the firm stopped signing the previous iOS 26.4.2 build. Without a signed image, users who upgraded can no longer revert to the older version through iTunes or Finder. The move trims the narrow window many rely on when a new release proves problematic for most iPhone owners.

Apple typically leaves a brief period after a major update for users to test stability before closing the downgrade path. Analysts view that window as a safety net for devices that encounter battery drain, UI glitches, or app incompatibilities. So far, early reports suggest iOS 26.5 performs solidly across the ecosystem for now, fitting the pattern of a polished release late in Apple’s software cycle.

With no immediate fix slated, the only major software event on the horizon is WWDC next month, when iOS 27 will be announced and a beta program begins. Apple may also issue a minor 26.5.1 patch if critical bugs emerge, but users stuck on 26.5 should expect the current build to remain their only option until then in the short term.
