Discord Implements Default End-to-End Encryption

Discord has activated end-to-end encryption by default for all voice and video calls across desktop, mobile, web, and console platforms. The comprehensive rollout covers DMs, group DMs, voice channels, and Go Live streams without requiring any user opt-in or settings adjustment. Stage channels remain the only exception due to their broadcasting nature.

The encryption relies on DAVE, an open-source protocol Discord introduced in September 2024. Mark Smith noted the technical challenges involved in creating an E2EE system that works seamlessly across phones, laptops, browsers, and gaming consoles simultaneously. He described it as unlike anything else currently shipped.

Discord is now removing client code that allowed unencrypted fallback, making encrypted calls the only option rather than a default. This stands in contrast to Meta's recent decision to remove encryption features from Instagram DMs, highlighting diverging approaches to user privacy across major communication platforms.
