Bluesky adds Reddit‑style communities for niche chats

Bluesky’s head of product Alex Benzer confirmed the platform will roll out Reddit‑style communities later this year. The feature creates smaller, topic‑focused spaces inside Bluesky’s single social feed, letting users join or launch groups, post content, and receive updates. Each community gets a unique handle that doubles as its URL, such as community-name.bsky.social. The move targets higher retention and gives niche groups a permanent home.

When a community’s page loads, owners can customize the landing experience with apps and tools built on the open‑source AT protocol that powers Bluesky’s ecosystem. Posts will surface automatically in a user’s Discover feed or a dedicated community feed, should the team implement one. Users may also opt in for push alerts on new activity.

The rollout mirrors Meta’s Threads communities launched in late 2025, but Bluesky’s version leans on its decentralized architecture, giving creators more control over branding and functionality. By segmenting conversations, the platform hopes to retain users seeking niche discussions without fragmenting the broader network. Early testers report smoother moderation tools compared to traditional forums.
