Epic Games Slams Apple's New EU App Store Fees

Hours after Apple announced changes to its EU App Store fees, Epic Games and CEO Tim Sweeney criticized the move, calling the new structure "new junk fees" that fail to truly open up the mobile app ecosystem to competition.

Apple's changes, which simplify the fee structure to percentages and reduce some business requirements, are intended to comply with the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA). The European Commission welcomed the changes and will monitor implementation starting October 1.

Epic argues the DMA requires Apple to allow developers to offer web-based purchases free of charge and permit competing app stores. The company claims Apple's 20% fee on alternative in-app payments and 15% fee on external links violates the law.

The dispute mirrors Epic's ongoing legal battle with Apple in the U.S., where similar fee structures were recently proposed. Epic maintains that any fees on external transactions are unlawful under both jurisdictions.
