Apple EU App Store Changes Preview US Impact

Apple's recent adjustments to App Store terms and fees for EU developers signal potential changes heading to the US market. These modifications stem from compliance with the EU's Digital Markets Act, which forced Apple to permit alternative app stores within the region.

Previously, Apple's June 2025 fee structure included a complex system with Initial Acquisition Fee (2%), Store Services Fee (5-13%), and Core Technology Fee (0.50 Euro or 5%). The new August 2026 rules simplify this significantly. Apps using Apple's in-app purchase system now pay 26% (down from 30%), with reduced rates of 15% for developers in assistive programs.

For alternative payment processing, Apple charges 20% (10% for program members). Links to external purchases face a combined 15% fee (10% for qualifying developers). Third-party app storefronts pay a 5% Core Technology Commission.

Child safety measures now prohibit Kids category apps from including external transaction links, and apps targeting under-13 users cannot link to external websites. Parental gates are required for apps linking to alternative payment systems serving underage users.

These EU-specific changes may foreshadow similar adjustments in the US, particularly following Apple's ongoing legal battles like the Epic Games lawsuit, which has already prompted commission rate reconsiderations.
