Apple's Next OLED Displays Could Hit 95% BT.2020 Color Gamut

Apple may upgrade future OLED displays to cover 95% of the BT.2020 color gamut, according to a TrendForce report from June 29. The research firm claims Apple plans to gradually introduce these panels across MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and iMac models, requiring new OLED emissive materials to achieve the wider color range.

Current premium Apple displays use DCI-P3, the standard for professional creative work and HDR content. BT.2020 represents a significantly wider color space designed for Ultra HD television, though no commercial OLED panel can reproduce the full spectrum today. Displays approaching 95% BT.2020 coverage can show more saturated reds, greens, and blues when compatible content exists.

The new materials—including MR-TADF, hyperfluorescence, and pTSF technologies—produce purer wavelengths while maintaining brightness, power efficiency, and panel lifespan. TrendForce expects MacBook Pro to adopt OLED displays between 2026 and early 2027, following the OLED iPad Pro launch in 2024.

Professional photographers, filmmakers, and HDR video editors would benefit most from this upgrade, as the wider gamut enables more accurate color reproduction for high-end creative workflows. While casual users might not notice dramatic differences, the improvement represents a meaningful technical advance in display quality.
