Apple’s new CMF targets color accuracy on Studio Display XDR

Apple unveiled its new Apple CMF 2026 alongside the 27‑inch Studio Display and Studio Display XDR, both priced with the familiar $400 stand. The CMF—short for Colour Matching Functions—updates the century‑old CIE 1931 model to better reflect how modern LED, OLED and quantum‑dot panels emit narrow‑band light. By collaborating with CIE and calibration vendors, Apple firmly hopes the new standard will improve cross‑display color consistency for professionals.

Testing by Jon D. and Lucas N. shows the non‑XDR Studio Display reaches Apple’s claimed 600 nits in its standard P3 mode, with a contrast ratio around 1100:1—slightly ahead of typical IPS panels. Grayscale and gamma tracking reveal minor cyan tint and uneven gamma in low‑brightness scenes, while the Photography and Digital Cinema modes cover roughly 98% of the P3 gamut.

The Apple CMF 2026 is applied only in the Studio Display XDR’s extreme‑brightness modes—P3‑2000 nits and a combined P3 + Adobe RGB 2000‑nit profile—while all other modes fall back to the traditional CIE 1931 space. This selective use preserves compatibility with existing workflows yet offers a path toward tighter white‑point control on Apple’s flagship display.
