Google Opens Fitbit Air to Custom Bands

Google is opening up the Fitbit Air to independent designers by releasing official specifications for creating custom bands and accessories. The company released design guidelines requiring bands to keep the optical heart rate and SpO2 sensors unobstructed while maintaining skin contact. Designers must also use gentle materials to prevent skin irritation and ensure bands provide stable wrist contact with gentle pressure for comfort during wear.

The Fitbit Air, launched just a week ago on May 27 for $99, features continuous 24/7 heart rate and blood-oxygen tracking in a screenless design. Originally available with three band options (Performance Loop, Active, or Modern), the device has already faced some pairing issues as some users received units ahead of schedule. Google is accelerating its Health app rollout to resolve these problems encountered by early adopters.

By opening the Fitbit Air to independent creators, Google aims to expand customization options beyond its current selection. Certified designs will receive a "Made by Google" badge for promotional purposes. The move represents Google's strategy to differentiate its fitness tracker through community-driven design while keeping the device accessible to both Android and iOS users at a competitive price point.
