Android 17 revamps iPhone-to-Android migration tool

Google unveiled a rebuilt Android Switch tool alongside the rollout of Android 17. Product lead Paul Dunlop announced the feature supports "more data than ever," letting users pull messages—including group chats—files, passwords, passkeys, Wi‑Fi credentials, alarms, calendar attachments and call logs from an iPhone to a new Android device. The transfer works wirelessly over Wi‑Fi or via cable, and it even replicates the iPhone home screen layout and accessibility settings.

The upgrade arrives as Android 17 debuts on Pixel 6 and newer models, bringing upgraded security, threat detection and a new "Mark as Lost" mode. Dunlop said the switch tool is being released today, June 17, to a limited slice of Android 17 devices, likely Pixel handsets first. By moving Google accounts and eSIM data during initial setup, the process aims to cut friction for iPhone defectors.

Industry analysts see the move as a direct challenge to Apple's ecosystem lock‑in. Providing a seamless, data‑rich migration lowers the barrier for consumers weighing a platform change. With the rollout limited but expanding, the upgraded Android Switch could accelerate Android's share of premium handset users.
