Android 17 Beta 3 brings desktop multitasking

Google delivered on its multitasking promise with Android 17 Beta 3, finally implementing the Bubbles system that lets users run almost any app in floating windows. The update reaches the platform stability milestone for Pixel 6 and newer devices, meaning SDK and NDK APIs are finalized. Developers can now prepare apps for Android 17's Play Store release while users gain true multitasking capabilities long after they were first promised.

The Bubbles framework allows opening any app in a floating window by long-pressing its icon. For larger screens, a new bubble bar UI lets users organize and move bubbles between set points. Quick Settings now feature separate Wi-Fi and mobile data toggles, and screen recording gains a floating control panel with quick edit, share, and delete options. Widgets now work correctly on external displays with automatic adjustments.

While Samsung offered similar DeX features for years and third-party launchers provided customization options, Android's native implementation brings these capabilities to more users. Accessibility improvements include granular audio control for hearing aids, per-app dark theme exceptions, and a new Location Button for precise session-based location sharing. Google appears focused on practical productivity improvements rather than just demonstration features, with the delayed but complete multitasking implementation finally making Android feel more desktop-like when needed.
