Google Pixel 11 event flop: Trevor Noah cringe

Google launched its Pixel 11 series and Pixel Watch 5 at 10 am, then re-announced them eight hours later in an awkward 1.5-hour online show hosted by Trevor Noah. At one point, only 57,000 people watched, and comments were disabled. The show felt disjointed, with Noah appearing bored next to PR-trained Google staff, making for a cringe fest.

Google's aim was to connect with consumers, but the delay killed interest. A better move would have been to follow Rockstar's GTA 6 strategy—partnering with a streaming service like Netflix for a polished, exclusive showcase. The best moments came when Joël Yawili, a Senior Product Manager, dropped the script and connected with Noah over their shared hometown, and when Google demonstrated the Sign-to-Text accessibility feature, which felt genuine and impactful.

The event wasn't a total failure—it just needed better timing and execution. Going forward, Google should consider shorter, more intimate formats or celebrity-hosted specials that feel less like a corporate presentation and more like authentic storytelling.
