Honor Robot Phone: Gimbal-Smartphone Hybrid Hands-On

The Honor Robot Phone is an intriguing combination of a smartphone and a gimbal that works surprisingly well. I love my DJI Pocket 3, but the Robot Phone takes convenience further by integrating a gimbal directly into a flagship phone. It can lock onto a face and pan/tilt to keep the subject centered, with the gimbal component 65% smaller than a regular gimbal. The magnetic kickstand in the case lets you stand it up without a tripod.

The partnership with ARRI enhances color science and offers filters and effects for creating the perfect look. You can film in LOG with preview filters, though you can't edit filters after capture. The downside is that the Robot Phone is exclusive to China, so it lacks Google services and uses Honor's Magic OS with the Yoyo assistant.

The 6.31-inch screen has a 120Hz refresh rate, 4320 Hz PWM dimming, and 6800-nit peak brightness, staying legible even under harsh sun. The triple-camera setup includes a 200MP main sensor, a 200MP periscope telephoto with 2.7x optical zoom and OIS, and a 50MP ultrawide. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 makes navigation fast and enjoyable.

The Robot Phone isn't perfect as a gimbal or a smartphone, but it's incredibly desirable for solo creators. At 9.6mm thick, it's far more pocket-friendly than the 33mm-thick Pocket 3. The best camera is the one in your pocket, and the Robot Phone is arguably the best for creators.
