Mohammad Islam of Cincinnati, Ohio, credits his Apple Watch with saving his life after he collapsed at home. Islam had felt unwell with symptoms including shortness of breath and pain, and later fell while taking out the trash. His Apple Watch's fall detection feature automatically contacted emergency services when he was unable to respond.

"I heard the sirens coming in," Islam recounted, realizing his watch had called 911. Doctors at the University of Cincinnati diagnosed him with blood clots in his lungs, a condition he believes would have been fatal had his watch not alerted paramedics.

The fall detection feature, available on Apple Watch Series 4 and later, is designed to detect sudden falls and automatically call emergency services if the user doesn't respond within one minute. It can also notify emergency contacts with a text message and location data. While turned off by default for users under 65, anyone can enable it via the Watch app on their iPhone.
