Welsh Rugby Deal Secures Ospreys Future Through 2028

Ospreys and Scarlets have welcomed a new agreement with the Welsh Rugby Union that could guarantee their survival until at least 2028. The deal comes after Y11 Sport & Media pulled out of purchasing Cardiff, forcing the regions to sign the Professional Rugby Agreement. Head coach Mark Jones called the development "positive news for Welsh rugby in general."

Jones expressed relief that Ospreys' future has been secured, noting the agreement brings stability for staffing, player recruitment, and morale. The WRU has the option to cut professional clubs from four to three, but the current deal runs through 2030 with a two-year notice period. Scarlets announced they would sign the PRA25 agreement shortly following due diligence.

The timing proved too late to retain Wales stars Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake, who joined Gloucester despite Ospreys' efforts to re-sign key players like Dan Edwards and Kieran Hardy. Jones acknowledged the uncertainty prompted their departures, saying the players felt they needed stability for their families. Ospreys now face Cardiff in a crucial United Rugby Championship match with playoff implications.
