Mayweather-Pacquiao Rematch Postponed Amid Legal Disputes

The highly anticipated rematch between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao has been postponed indefinitely, according to Pacquiao's team. The fight was scheduled for September 19 at the Sphere in Las Vegas, with Mayweather coming out of retirement for his first professional bout since defeating Conor McGregor in 2017. Pacquiao, who retired in 2021, returned last year for a draw against Mario Barrios.

Pacquiao's camp cited 'a volatile mix of federal lawsuits, scheduling overbooks, and financial gridlock' surrounding Mayweather's team as the reason for the delay. The earliest possible date for the rematch is now early 2027, representing a significant setback for boxing fans worldwide. This would have been the first meeting between the two legends since their 2015 'Fight of the Century,' which Mayweather won by unanimous decision.

Events company CSI sued Mayweather last week seeking to recover at least $4.65m paid for exclusive promotion rights to the rematch and a failed exhibition bout with Mike Tyson. If Mayweather and CSI resolve their disputes, promoters may pivot to rescheduling the Tyson exhibition for September 12. The legal complications have also affected Mayweather's scheduled Athens exhibition against Mike Zambidis, which ESPN reports is now off due to a CSI injunction.

The postponement dashes hopes of witnessing two of boxing's greatest performers in the ring again, leaving their legendary rivalry without a proper conclusion. Both fighters have nothing left to prove, but the financial and legal entanglements suggest this saga may never reach its intended climax.
