Climbing emerges as the biggest winner in UK Sport's latest funding boost, receiving an additional £1.4m - a 60%+ increase. This substantial investment comes as part of a £4m package distributed across 16 sports, aimed at strengthening Britain's medal prospects for the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The total funding for the LA 2028 cycle reaches nearly £334m across Olympic and Paralympic disciplines.

The climbing surge follows teenager Toby Roberts' historic gold medal at Paris 2024, Britain's first Olympic climbing medal. Paris triumph sparked participation growth, with the Pro Climbing League launching earlier this year. UK Sport recognizes climbing's medal potential as three climbing categories will debut at LA 2028. Other sports benefiting include canoeing, para-canoeing, and lacrosse preparing for its Olympic debut.

Dr Laura Needham, British Mountaineering Council performance director, emphasized the funding enables crucial support services for athletes. The investment allows expansion of psychology, nutrition, and medical provisions. With this financial backing, Britain aims to solidify its position among Olympic and Paralympic medal contenders in the United States in two years' time.
