Cameron Norrie retired injured from his French Open first-round match against Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, ending his run in the tournament before it truly began. The 30-year-old British number one sustained a rib injury he traced to overdoing preparation and could barely serve once trailing 7-6 (9-7) 2-0. He told his team every serve was a struggle before calling for the trainer and sitting in the shade.

Norrie had never retired at a Grand Slam or ATP Tour event before Tuesday's loss. His decision came after back-to-back Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome, followed by the Geneva Open leading into Roland Garros. Annabel Croft praised the call, saying it was better not to worsen the rib injury before building toward Wimbledon in four weeks.

The retirement leaves Jacob Fearnley as the only remaining British man in the singles draw, with Katie Boulter and Francesca Jones advancing in the women's event. Norrie acknowledged he probably should have retired from his Geneva match as well, admitting he overtrained by not listening to his body. His fitness had been a defining asset, but the rib issue ended his 2026 clay-court campaign on day one.
