Promoter Eddie Hearn is urging the UK government to grant a British passport to boxing champion Bilal Fawaz, who has lived in the country for over 20 years. Fawaz, 38, was trafficked to the UK at age 14 and has since become a British and Commonwealth light-middleweight champion. Despite representing England as an amateur and now excelling as a professional, his immigration status prevents him from fighting abroad or traveling with his family.

Fawaz's journey is detailed in the BBC documentary 'Fighting for Freedom'. He endured abuse and neglect in his youth, escaping confinement to enter the care system. After convictions for minor offenses, he found stability in boxing, which he credits with saving him. He received a work permit at 33, later than most professional fighters achieve such milestones.

Currently on a 10-year route to settlement, Fawaz will be 43 before being eligible for citizenship. Without a passport, he cannot accept lucrative international fight opportunities. Hearn argues this is a "ridiculous" situation, stating the government should be "embarrassed" and that Fawaz deserves recognition and respect for his contributions and dedication to the sport. The Home Office has declined to comment on individual cases.
